Sun Hats in Fukuoka

by Roy Bentley

Under a flat overcast sky, a narrow alley in Fukuoka’s Nakasu district reveals a wet pavement where rainwater pools around a cluster of sun hats discarded on a low stone ledge. The hats, bright red and yellow against the gray concrete, are partially obscured by a hanging bamboo screen that filters the diffuse light into vertical stripes. Local proof emerges in the traditional machiya architecture, with its dark wooden latticework and sliding shoji doors standing in sharp contrast to the modern plastic buckets nearby. A sudden gust lifts the brim of the frontmost hat, revealing a glimpse of the damp, pebble-strewn ground beneath it.
