Campfire Faces Under Winter Stars

Orange flames lick upward from a ring of dark stones, illuminating three faces turned toward the heat. Thick mist swirls around the group, softening the edges of their winter jackets and the rough bark of nearby birch trees. Above, a dense canopy of stars stretches across a midnight sky, their white points piercing the gray haze. The ground glows faintly with reflected firelight, against the deep blue shadows cast by the cold horizon. Frost dusts the shoulders of the nearest person, while the firelight catches the moisture on their eyelashes. One ember floats upward, disappearing into the cold, starlit air.
