Cabbages at Dawn Light
by Seth Taylor
Misty dawn light diffuses through the heavy fog, softening the sharp geometry of a narrow Roman alleyway where a local vendor arranges cabbages in a wire crate outside a closed bakery. The pale green heads of the vegetables contrast with the damp, peeling ochre paint on the stucco wall behind them, while a vine climbs the corner, its leaves slick with condensation. A scuffed wooden crate sits nearby, its edges nicked from years of use, at the base of the scene in tactile reality. The mist blurs the distant archway, isolating the produce and the rough texture of the wall in a quiet, monochromatic moment before the city fully wakes.
