Milan Customer at Noon Light
by Abraham Hale
The narrow passage of Milan’s Navigli district hums with midday winter light reflecting off wet cobblestones and dark canal water. A vendor’s cart overflows with glossy eggplants stacked near crates of rough potatoes, their deep purple skins against the gray stone. An elderly woman in a thick wool coat examines the produce, her gloved hand reaching toward a vegetable, while a metal paring knife rests on a nearby crate handle, glinting in the flat, overcast sky. Above, frayed string lights hang limp between brick buildings, unused in the daylight. A fleeting moment of transaction and texture, grounded in the damp chill and the vibrant, chaotic arrangement of fresh goods against the historic urban backdrop.
