Glass Carafe in Rome at Dawn Light
by Laila Hoover
A thin layer of mist rests on the pale travertine facade of a corner building in Rome as dawn breaks. A street vendor adjusts a display of wool scarves draped over a wrought-iron railing, their deep reds and browns absorbing the cool gray light. Next to the scarves, a glass carafe with a wooden stopper sits on a small stone ledge, condensation beading on its surface. The cobblestones are slick with moisture, reflecting the muted tones of the early morning. A few pedestrians hurry past, their breath visible in the crisp air, while the distant silhouette of a church dome fades into the fog. The quiet intimacy of a Roman street before the day fully awakens.
