A damp, gray mist rests on the narrow Via dei Coronari in Rome as early morning light struggles through the fog. An elderly woman stands on a wrought-iron balcony, her hands busy with a wicker mending basket resting on her lap. She wears a thick, hand-knitted cardigan, its wool damp with the morning chill, as she threads a needle through fabric. Below, the cobblestones glisten with rain, and the faded ochre stucco of the building across the street emerges faintly from the haze. A small, weathered doormat lies at the base of her door, slightly curled at the edges. A quiet, lived-in moment of daily routine against the backdrop of historic Roman architecture.
