A wet Vancouver street corner glows under the flat, diffuse light of a winter noon, where heavy rain has turned the asphalt into a dark, reflective mirror. A local resident in a bright yellow raincoat stands beside a rusted metal bus shelter, shaking water from a brown dog that sits patiently on the dry bench inside. The dog’s fur is matted with droplets, against the sleek, slick surface of a nearby terracotta planter sitting empty on the sidewalk, its warm orange hue popping against the grey concrete. Steam rises faintly from a nearby vent, blurring the background of towering glass skyscrapers and red brick heritage buildings.
