Boy Climbing Mango Tree in Bahia Garden
by Arlo Meza
Bright midday sunlight falls through a dense canopy of broad, glossy green mango leaves, creating shifting patches of light and shadow on rough bark and a boy's weathered skin. The child grips thick, knotted branches with calloused hands, legs wrapped securely around the trunk as he ascends. Below, terraced garden plots stretch out in geometric layers, their soil dark and moist from the recent monsoon rains, bordered by low stone walls. A vast expanse of cloudless, pale blue sky fills the negative space above and around the tree, showing the height of the climb. The boy's posture is relaxed yet focused, a small figure against the towering greenery and the expansive, still air of the Bahian afternoon. One leaf edge glints sharply where it catches the direct sun.
