Biologist Crouched In Reeds With Specimen Vials
by Erik Ballard
Bright morning light floods the wetlands near Mbale, illuminating a researcher crouched low among tall, dry reeds. The scientist wears field gear suitable for the turn of seasons, with a leather belt holding clear glass vials clipped securely at the hip. Dramatic clouds roll overhead, casting shifting shadows across the water's surface and the textured stalks. The researcher's posture is rigid and disciplined, hands moving with precision near the reed bases. Sunlight reflects sharply off the glass vials, creating hard white highlights against the earthy browns and greens of the vegetation. The water ripples gently around the crouched knees, mirroring the cloud formations above. One reflection of a reed tip breaks the water's surface near the researcher's elbow.
