Behind Steam in Athens

Through the steam-condensed glass of a small taverna window in Plaka, the warm yellow interior light spills onto the cool blue hour street. Inside, a cluttered service counter holds a faded blue and white porcelain jar, its glaze reflecting the neon sign from outside. A hand reaches past a jar of preserved lemons to adjust a stack of rough linen napkins, ignoring the empty stoneware crocks stacked in the back. The street outside is slick with recent rain, mirroring the amber glow of the window frame.
