Cool morning light spills across a narrow, damp HDB corridor where a shopkeeper balances a bamboo tray of steaming kaya toast on one hip while carefully adjusting a metal tong with the other hand. The steam rises in thin, persistent wisps against the gray concrete pillars, catching the pale, diffused sky visible down the alley. A worn leather basketball rests near a discarded shoe, its surface scuffed by years of concrete play, while a chipped ceramic mug sits precariously on a low plastic stool nearby.
