Lemon in Izmir at Midday Light

by Corey Beltran

A narrow service alley in Izmir’s Karşıyaka district reveals a lived-in utility wall under flat, overcast midday light. A weathered blue metal doorframe anchors the left side, its paint peeling to reveal rust around hinge screws that have eaten into the steel. To the right, a small window box made of chipped terracotta holds dried basil stalks and a single, bright lemon that has rolled out from a nearby basket. The ground is paved with worn grey stone slabs, damp from a recent rain, reflecting the dull sky. A faded ceramic tile from a local pottery shard lies half-buried in the mud near the threshold.
