Baker Working in Cairo
by April Ryan
Rain slicks the cracked asphalt of a narrow Cairo alley as dusk bleeds into indigo, reflecting the warm, amber spill from an open bakery door. Inside, a baker in a flour-dusted white apron leans over a scarred wooden counter, his hands moving with practiced speed to shape dough. A metal dish rack sits heavy with cooling flatbreads, steam rising in thin, ghostly ribbons that fight the damp chill. Outside, a passerby in a dark coat pauses under a corrugated tin awning, watching the activity through the glass front, which is beaded with condensation and raindrops. The rough, sun-baked brick of the surrounding buildings, contrasting sharply with the soft, glowing interior light and the wet, dark street beyond.
