First light after rain washes the narrow alley in Cairo with a cool, diffused glow, reflecting off the wet asphalt and the glazed ceramic tiles lining the lower walls of a modest shop. A gardener stands near the entrance, wiping mud from his work gloves with a coarse towel hanging from a rusted hook. Beside him, a wooden crate holds damp soil and a pair of discarded whisks, their metal tines catching the soft ambient light.
