Unloading Bread in Cape Town

by Taylor McDaniel

First light after rain bleeds through the heavy, wet air of a Cape Town township, illuminating a narrow concrete stoep where a local baker unloads crates of steaming bread from a battered delivery van. The wet pavement reflects the grey sky and the vivid pink of bougainvillea spilling over a corrugated iron fence, creating a sharp color contrast against the dull grey concrete. Steam rises from the open oven door, mixing with the mist, while a customer in a yellow raincoat waits patiently, holding a paper bag. The immediate, tactile reality of morning commerce, with water droplets clinging to the rough brickwork and the baker’s flour-dusted apron standing out against the damp, shadowed alleyway.
