Drying Crocks in Cairo

by Walter Henry

Dusk settles over a narrow Cairo alley as light rain slicks the weathered limestone facade, turning the street into a mirror of fading blue and amber light. A shopkeeper stands under a corrugated metal awning, drying a stack of large stoneware crocks with a rough cloth, the earthy red clay against the wet gray stone behind him. Above, a rusted window fan hangs open, its blades still, watching over the scene. On a nearby ledge, a few bright orange zinnias in a chipped plastic pot catch the last ambient glow, their vibrant petals damp and heavy with rain.
