Baker in Lyon at Dawn Light
by Pablo Neal
Mist rests on the damp cobblestones of a Lyon traboule entrance as a baker in a flour-dusted apron maneuvers a heavy rolling cart loaded with cooling racks of pain au chocolat. The gray dawn light diffuses through the fog, softening the sharp edges of the surrounding limestone facades and highlighting the steam rising from the cart’s vents. A few water droplets rest on the broad leaves of a potted plant near the doorway, trembling slightly as the wheels bump over the uneven stone. The baker pauses to adjust a metal tongs resting on the cart’s edge, his breath visible in the cold air, creating a quiet moment of routine amidst the sleeping city’s misty silence.
