Art Deco Cinema Facade in Mardin Prayer Hall
by Lucy Sloan
Stark fluorescent tubes cast a harsh, even glow across an art deco cinema facade installed within the stone walls of a prayer hall in Mardin. The facade features geometric stepped patterns and stylized floral motifs carved in plaster, against the rough, weathered limestone of the surrounding architecture. Predawn darkness presses against the edges of the room, leaving the stone arches and prayer niches in deep shadow while the screen area remains brightly illuminated. Rain streaks the high, narrow windows visible in the background, hinting at the monsoon season outside, though the interior air remains still. A rectangular wooden frame within the stone wall borders the cinema entrance, creating a distinct visual layer that separates the sacred space from the cinematic display. The white light reflects off the smooth, painted surface of the art deco columns, ending on a sharp shadow line where the plaster meets the rough masonry.
