Preparing Sardines in Essaouira

Mist rests on the whitewashed facade of a traditional riad in Essaouira, softening the sharp geometry of the blue-painted wooden shutters that line the narrow alley. A fisherman’s wife stands on the low stone step, her hands busy with a cluster of fresh sardines, their silver scales catching the diffuse gray light. Beside her, a weathered wicker basket holds a few rough terracotta bowls, their earthy tones at the base of the scene against the cool, damp air. The street is empty save for a single vintage Italian majolica plate resting on a windowsill, its vibrant cobalt and yellow patterns stark against the peeling white plaster.
