Fruit Crates in Salvador in in Salvador, Brazil

Fruit Crates in Salvador

by Brett Byers

Wet cobblestones of Pelourinho reflect the pale, diffused sky as a vendor rearranges crates of bright tropical fruit near the church steps. A worn nail brush rests against a crate of mangoes, its bristles stained with dirt from the previous day’s work. Rain has left the stone streets slick and dark, against the vibrant orange and yellow of the fruit piles. Pedestrians hurry past under umbrellas, their colorful clothing adding splashes of red and blue to the gray morning. The quiet bustle of early commerce in Salvador, where the rain has just stopped and the city begins to wake.
