Arranging Produce in Kaohsiung
Under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast Kaohsiung midday, a street vendor tends to a stainless steel cart parked beside a damp sidewalk lined with tropical hibiscus. The vendor’s hands, gloved in translucent plastic, arrange bright orange persimmons and green pomelos on a slatted wooden cutting board that bears the deep, chaotic knife marks of years of use. Beside the fruit, a red woven basket overflows with leafy greens, while a small hourglass sits precariously near the cash register, tracking the rush of lunchtime customers. The wet pavement reflects the gray sky and the vendor’s yellow raincoat, creating a muted palette where the vibrant produce pops against the gray concrete and steel.
