Apprentice in Cairo at Late Afternoon Light
by Wayne Rosas
Late afternoon sun slants through the latticed mashrabiya windows of a Khan el-Khalili workshop, casting geometric shadows across a cluttered workbench where a brass carafe sits beside a wooden hand plane. A young apprentice wipes dust from his hands, his eyes fixed on a stack of leather-bound books stacked precariously near a potted olive plant. The warm light catches the texture of woven mats rolled in the corner, while outside, the faint blur of a passing scooter adds motion to the stillness. The weight of tradition with the casual chaos of daily craft, anchored by the tactile contrast of smooth metal against rough wood and the vibrant green of the plant against the dusty beige walls.
