Sorting Herbs in Cairo

Winter noon light strikes the weathered stucco of a Cairo workshop, casting sharp, geometric shadows across a cluttered workbench where a rusted hacksaw rests beside a cracked glass pitcher. A local gardener, wearing a faded blue galabeya, leans over a small drying rack of drying herbs, his hands deftly sorting the green fronds into piles. The scene is anchored by the rough texture of the stone walls and the bright, harsh sunlight that bleaches the color from the wooden surfaces. In the background, the faint outline of a minaret pierces the clear blue sky, at the base of the intimate activity in the broader urban fabric.
