Acid Green Volcanic Lake in Himalayan Crater in along a wave-cut shoreline in Himachal Pradesh

Acid Green Volcanic Lake in Himalayan Crater

by Patrick Wade

Brilliant acid green water fills a deep volcanic crater, its surface rippled by a gentle breeze. The shoreline curves sharply where a wave-cut bank exposes layers of dark, crumbled rock and pale sediment. Early summer light strikes the water at a low angle, intensifying the neon hue against the surrounding slate-gray slopes. A few sparse, hardy shrubs rest on the upper rim, their green leaves muted by the dry mountain air. The sky above is a vast, unbroken expanse of pale blue, devoid of clouds. Shadows stretch long across the crater floor, defining the rugged texture of the volcanic soil. The water meets the shore in a thin, white line of foam that contrasts with the dark, wet stones.
