Emerald Lake in Yunnan Volcanic Crater Before Dusk

Copper-toned light spills across the rim of a volcanic crater in early winter, casting a warm glow over the jagged, weathered stone. An emerald lake fills the basin, its surface rippled by strong winds that whip the water into sharp, whitecaps. The horizon glows with a soft, fading band of light that wraps around the curved edges of the crater walls. Sparse, dry grasses rest on the rocky slopes, their brown stalks bending under the gusts. The water's deep green contrasts with the rust-colored earth and the pale, clearing sky above. A thin layer of mist hovers just above the lake's surface where the wind stirs the cool air. The final ripple spreads outward from a small disturbance near the center.
