Acid Green Lake in Volcanic Crater Strathcona in across a wide valley floor near Strathcona, Vancouver

Acid Green Lake in Volcanic Crater Strathcona

by Oliver Lawson

Turquoise water fills a deep, circular depression carved into dark volcanic rock. The surface shimmers with intense acid green hues, rippling under the pull of strong winds that sweep across the wide valley floor below. Surrounding the crater, slopes of grey stone and sparse, wind-bent vegetation mark the transition between summer and autumn. Late afternoon sun casts long, sharp shadows from the jagged rim, highlighting the rough texture of the cooled lava. The water remains still enough to reflect the clear sky, yet the edges churn with white foam where gusts strike the shore. A thin line of frost dusts the highest grass blades near the rim, signaling the turning season. The water meets the stone with a distinct, foamy boundary.
