A slanted concrete stoop in a Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood bears the heavy, damp weight of a midwinter noon, where a discarded cardboard box sits open beside a rusted iron railing. Inside the box, a single, bright yellow folding fan lies stark against the gray, flaking paint of the steps, an absurd artifact of summer warmth abandoned to the cold.
