Thick insulated district heating pipes traverse the gap between two weathered concrete apartment blocks in a dense New York neighborhood, their gray cladding against the building's aged brick. The scene is lit by the deep copper-toned light of late afternoon before dusk, casting long, sharp shadows across the fire escapes and window ledges.
