Woodblock Printmaker Inking Cherry Plate in Shrine
Warm golden light falls through heavy overcast skies, casting a copper-toned glow across the interior of a shrine near Santiago de los Caballeros. A printmaker stands before a workbench, applying dark ink to the carved surface of a cherry wood plate. The wood grain is visible under the thick pigment, against the smooth, rounded edges of the tool. Lanterns line the shrine walls, their paper surfaces diffusing the fading daylight into soft, amber patches. Early winter chill is suggested by the heavy wool coat draped over the printmaker's shoulders and the bare branches visible through a high window. The foreground dissolves into a soft bokeh of hanging lanterns, drawing focus to the precise motion of the roller against the wood. one drop of ink rests on the edge of the carved block, catching the dim light.
