Dusk settles over a narrow Beijing hutong alley, the wet asphalt reflecting the amber glow of overhead streetlamps and the red neon of a distant sign. A young woman in a translucent yellow raincoat pauses beneath the eaves of a weathered brick residence, her attention fixed on a small plastic bag containing a few dark berries, likely bought from a nearby vendor. The scene is framed by the peeling turquoise paint of an old utility box, its chipped surface revealing layers of gray primer and rust. Rain streaks down the glass of a high window, blurring the interior lights into soft, diffuse orbs.
