The damp dusk light spills through a narrow alleyway in Beijing, catching the wet sheen of red brick walls and the glossy tiles of a communal corridor. A resident stands on a wobbly aluminum ladder, wiping condensation from a high window pane, while a yellow plastic dish rack sits precariously on a nearby ledge, dripping rainwater onto stacked porcelain jars. Below, a cluttered magazine rack overflows with glossy flyers, next to a hacksaw resting on a workbench beside a stack of spice tins.
