Tea Jars in Beijing in in Beijing, China

Tea Jars in Beijing

by Whitney Singh

Dusk settles over a narrow Hutong alley as light rain slicks the grey brick walls and wet cobblestones. A vendor’s cart sits under a faded red umbrella, its plastic sheeting dripping onto the pavement. Inside the dimly lit interior, a woman in a yellow raincoat arranges rows of glass tea jars, her fingers leaving faint smudges on the condensation-covered surfaces. Steam rises from a small electric kettle, blurring the reflection of neon signs from the street outside. The quiet, functional rhythm of evening commerce, where the warmth of the shop contrasts sharply with the cool, damp blue of the Beijing night.
