Silhouetted Midfielder Chipping Ball Over Harbor Defense
by Melvin McKay
Monsoon clouds heavy and gray press against the horizon where the sun dips low, casting the figure of a soccer midfielder into a sharp, dark silhouette. The player balances on one leg, leg extended high to chip a white soccer ball over the imaginary line of a defensive wall. Wind whips the loose fabric of their jersey and shorts, distorting the outline against the bright, burning sky. The setting is a rugged harbor quay near Adzopé, where weathered wooden pilings and wet, reflective stones anchor the ground. A Dutch angle tilt tilts the entire horizon line, adding clear unstable motion to the still frame. The ball hangs suspended in the air, a small white disc against the fading light, while the wet pavement below mirrors the chaotic energy of the moment. A spray of water droplets kicks up from the player's foot, caught in the backlight as tiny, glowing specks.
