Watching Cyclist in Athens
by Randall Bird
Mist rests on the narrow, sloping alleyway of Plaka, softening the edges of whitewashed neoclassical facades and peeling blue shutters. A small, scruffy terrier sits alert on the wet cobblestones, its fur damp and matted, watching a delivery cyclist struggle with a heavy wooden crate balanced precariously on his handlebars. The cyclist, wearing a bright yellow rain slicker, leans forward, gripping the bars as he navigates the slick stones. Behind them, a wrought-iron balcony overhangs the street, draped with drying laundry and a terracotta pot holding a wilting geranium. The diffused light of dawn reflects off the wet pavement, creating a mirror-like sheen that contrasts with the rough texture of the ancient stone walls.
