Waders and Buckets in Dawn Shadow in at a remote field station in Kinshasa

Waders and Buckets in Dawn Shadow

by Aidan McCullough

Deep shadows dominate the frame where rubber waders hang in rows against a rough, corrugated metal wall. Rim light slices through the predawn gloom, tracing the curved shoulders of the gear and catching the wet sheen of a light drizzle on the floor. Plastic specimen buckets stack in tight clusters, their surfaces slick with condensation from the wet season air. The rubber texture of the waders shows fine wrinkles and dust, against the smooth, reflective curves of the buckets. Raindrops bead along the metal siding, running down in thin, silver streaks that vanish into the darkness below. One bucket rim reflects the faint, cool gray of the sky.
