Sediment Tubes on Bench in Bamako Night Rain

by Natalia Hanna

Dark corrugated metal curves overhead, sheltering a wooden bench where cylindrical sediment tubes stand in neat rows. Raindrops rest on the rough plastic surfaces, catching faint rim light from the distant observatory dome. A mud-splashed notebook lies open beside the tubes, its pages dark with moisture. The deep shadow swallows the foreground, leaving only the wet edges of the equipment visible against the black night. Occasional drops slide down the tube sides, tracing thin paths through the grime. The turn of the seasons hangs heavy in the air, visible only in the way the light reflects off the wet wood grain. The negative space around the bench emphasizes the isolation of the instruments under the dripping roof.
