Volcanic Cone Reflection in Floodplain Crater Lake in across a floodplain after rain near Sopocachi, La Paz

Volcanic Cone Reflection in Floodplain Crater Lake

by Kristina Cook

Hard coastal glare strikes the water surface of a shallow crater lake, creating a sharp, mirror-like plane that perfectly inverts the dark volcanic cone rising above. Ripples disrupt the reflection where wind whips across the water, blurring the symmetry between the steep, dark slopes and their watery twin. The surrounding floodplain stretches out in muted greens and browns, saturated by recent rain. Wet mud and sparse late spring vegetation line the immediate shore, glistening under the intense light. The composition remains stark and minimalist, isolating the geometric relationship between the cone and its reflection against a pale, washed-out sky. The edge of the water meets a patch of dark, wet soil.
