Uzbek Suzani Hanging on Mumbai Desk
by Irene Bates
Soft overcast light from a monsoon morning fills the room, casting a gentle, even glow across a wooden writing desk in Juhu, Mumbai. An embroidered Suzani wall hanging from Uzbekistan dominates the background, its vibrant reds, blues, and creams featuring intricate floral motifs and geometric borders that contrast with the muted gray of the wet window frame. The heavy fabric drapes slightly, revealing the texture of the thick stitching and the worn sheen of the cotton threads. A small brass lamp sits in the corner of the desk, its bulb unlit but adding a warm metallic accent against the cool, diffused daylight. Dust motes are not visible, but the stillness of the wet air seems to settle on the surface of the desk. at the edge is a single raindrop tracing a slow path down the glass pane behind the hanging.
