A damp, grey light falls through the dense canopy of Jacaranda trees lining a Johannesburg street, casting cool, diffuse shadows on the wet asphalt where morning mist rests on the ground. In the foreground, a street vendor’s cart is already active, its stainless steel surfaces reflecting the overcast sky and the blurred motion of passing minibus taxis. Condensation beads on the glass of a chilled drink dispenser, against the steam rising from a large metal pot of boiling coffee. The vendor, wrapped in a thick woolen shawl, pours a dark liquid into a plastic cup, the steam momentarily obscuring their face.
