Unfired Pottery Shelves in Karaikudi Kiln Room

Rows of unbaked clay vessels line wooden shelves stretching deep into a humid kiln room inside a grain elevator near Karaikudi. Flat noon light floods the space, revealing the rough, matte texture of the unfired earth and the weathered grain of the timber supports. The air hangs heavy, visible as a slight haze that softens the distant shelves where clay pots await firing. Dust motes float in the bright shafts, settling on the rounded rims and irregular handles of the stacked ceramics. The leading lines of the shelving units converge toward the back wall, showing the scale of production. A faint sheen of moisture rests on the lower clay surfaces, against the dry, dusty air of the dry season.
