Morning light spills across a narrow alleyway in Surabaya, illuminating a row of faded turquoise shop shutters where the paint peels in long, curling strips to reveal older layers of gray plaster. A plastic laundry basket, battered and stained with mud, sits overturned on the damp concrete pavement, spilling out a few damp socks and a single red clothespin that catches the early sun.
