Tugboats Navigate Sicily Harbor Maze in on a wind-open causeway in Sicily

Tugboats Navigate Sicily Harbor Maze

by Scott Reid

Low-hanging gray clouds press against a bright midmorning sky above a wind-swept causeway in Sicily. From a high vantage point, the view looks down at a cluster of sturdy tugboats threading through a harbor maze of concrete pilings and narrow water channels. The boats, painted in faded reds and industrial yellows, cut through choppy monsoon waters that churn with white foam. Rugged stone walls line the causeway, weathered by salt and time, creating a tight urban grid for the vessels. A lone figure in a raincoat stands on the nearest pier, small against the scale of the machinery. The water reflects the overcast light, turning the channel surfaces into a mosaic of slate and steel gray. A wet rope coils tightly around a rusted cleat on the nearest boat.
