Toronto Observatory Stairwell at The Deepest Night Sky Light

by Kurt Potter

A narrow concrete stairwell inside the University of Toronto’s astrophysics building is lit by the dim, crimson glow of safety bulbs mounted on the walls. The air is thick with the dust of an old library, and the stone steps show signs of decades of foot traffic. A dented aluminum coffee tin sits on the landing near a heavy iron door, its label faded by time. Through a small, high window at the top of the stairs, the deepest night sky is visible, a vast expanse of darkness punctuated by a few bright stars. The quiet solitude of late-night study, with the red light casting long, sharp shadows against the textured concrete walls.
