A concrete spiral staircase winds upward through the interior of an old observatory building in Hobart. The steps are worn and show signs of heavy foot traffic from late-night astronomers. Small red safety bulbs mounted at intervals cast a deep crimson glow on the metal railings and rough plaster walls. Light creates long shadows that stretch across the landing. A heavy wooden door at the top of the frame is slightly ajar, revealing a sliver of darkness beyond.
