Surreal Pantry Kettle and Horizontal Tree in in a breakfast nook near Port Elizabeth

Surreal Pantry Kettle and Horizontal Tree

by Jasper Velazquez

Dim window light from an early evening sky near Port Elizabeth washes over a kitchen pantry shelf. A silver kettle emits a thick, unnatural plume of steam that transforms into the canopy of a small, leafy tree growing horizontally out of the plaster wall. Green leaves rest directly above jars of golden marmalade, their glass surfaces reflecting the soft glow of interior lamps. The tree's bark is textured and rough against the smooth, painted surface of the nook wall. Dust motes hang suspended in the air where the steam meets the light. One leaf tip touches the rim of a ceramic jar, blurring the line between domestic storage and impossible nature.
