Surfers Waiting on Harbor Quay in Autumn Light

Deep shadows swallow the concrete quay where surfers huddle near the water's edge, their figures outlined by a thin rim of pale morning light. The air hangs heavy and humid, leaving a sheen on the wet pavement that reflects the gray sky. Autumn leaves in shades of rust and gold scatter across the ground, against the dark, oily water. The surfers stand motionless, their wetsuits tight against their frames, heads turned toward the harbor entrance. A low angle from the ground emphasizes the height of the surrounding quay walls, trapping the group in a narrow strip of light. at the edge is a single ripple spreading across the dark surface near a rubber tire.
