Street Vendor in Beijing
by Paige Kim
A street vendor in a thick down jacket tends to a steaming metal cart on a Beijing sidewalk, the winter noon sun casting sharp, short shadows on the grey pavement. Steam rises vigorously from a large pot, momentarily obscuring a cluster of white foam containers stacked nearby. A yellow measuring tape hangs loosely from the cart’s handle, its plastic hook catching the light, while a red plastic spatula rests against a bowl of chopped green onions. In the blurred background, a traditional grey brick wall contrasts with the modern glass facade of a nearby office building. Pedestrians in heavy coats hurry past, their breath visible in the cold air, creating a dynamic, lived-in scene of urban winter commerce.
