Stoneware Crocks in Jaipur
by Kylie Yoder
Under the sharp, high-contrast glare of a Jaipur winter noon, a cluster of terracotta stoneware crocks rests on a sun-baked lime plaster ledge, their earthy orange tones absorbing the intense heat. The rough, unglazed texture of the pottery contrasts with the smooth, cracked surface of the surrounding wall, which is stained with decades of dust and soot from nearby cooking fires. In the background, the blurred geometry of a traditional jali screen filters the light, casting intricate, geometric shadows that dance across the curved bodies of the vessels. One, dried neem leaf rests on the rim of the nearest crock, its brittle veins sharply defined against the matte clay.
