Majolica Plates in Jaipur
by Cody Perkins
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday in Jaipur, a cluster of vibrant blue majolica plates rests on a rough plaster ledge inside a traditional haveli courtyard. The glazed ceramic surfaces catch the ambient grey sky, creating sharp, cool reflections that contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the surrounding sandstone walls. Behind the plates, a wooden jharokha window frame with intricate lattice work allows a glimpse of the busy street below, at the base of the scene in its specific architectural context. One, chipped rim on the foreground plate reveals the underlying clay body, showing the tactile reality of the handcrafted object against the smooth glaze.
