Stone Well Climbing Roses Beijing Courtyard Noon in inside a tiled stair hall in Beijing

Stone Well Climbing Roses Beijing Courtyard Noon

by Charles Cordova

Bright noon light floods a courtyard defined by traditional Chinese tiled stair halls. A weathered stone well stands centrally, its rough masonry against the smooth, glazed tiles of the surrounding walls. Climbing roses burst from the base of the well, their fresh pink and green stems winding up the ancient stone against the backdrop of early spring. The sky above fills with dramatic, heavy clouds that cast sharp, flat shadows across the tiled floor. Low angle perspective emphasizes the height of the stair hall and the vertical reach of the climbing vines. One white petal rests on the wet stone rim of the well.
